Trying to get a DJ gig in Singapore?

Last weekend I got totally sloshed and danced my ass off at the best thing to happen to the Singapore party scene this year, Super 0 Series Parties. But before all of this craziness, I had the chance to chat with some super cool people from Pop Trash Studio, Pioneer DJ and a few veteran DJs mixed in with some fresh blood.

One of the new DJ’s asked me how to get gigs since he has already send out his CD and mixes. First thing I ask him is “Who did you give them to?”

“The DJ,” he says.

I chuckled a little bit sorry for the fella. I don’t think he realized he was stepping on toes when he passed off his CD to the DJ at such and such place. So I explained to him that if he wants to DJ there he shouldn’t go and ask the DJ who is playing right then and there, that’s like saying “Hey, I want your job. Give it to me.”

Another veteran DJ overheard us and added, “There are one of 2 things the DJs did with those CDs. #1 Threw them away or #2 Passed it off as their own.”

As funny as this all seemed to us who have been DJing for quite sometime in Singapore, obviously this young buck was he was out of his element and asked for the real truth.

Here’s a few tips I shared with him on getting gigs in Singapore.

1. Go to the venue, spend money. Don’t just order water and be a douche.

2. Make friends with the staff…i.e. tip them well. People are always more willing to help someone who scratches their back first.

3. Meet the manager and give compliments. :)

Unconscious Therapy (formerly The Untitled Documentary About House Music) debuts at the Chicago International Movies & Music Festival this Saturday. The trailer for it is incredibly slick and quite likely the best I’ve seen from the vast but not necessarily bountiful House Music Doc genre, featuring shots with Frankie Knuckles, Mark Farina, Derrick Carter, Marques Wyatt, Doc Martin, Andy Caldwell, Heather, Colette, Lego (tearing up here) and more
